Philippines, Thailand and Singapore tie with 7 gold in 8th IMSO
A close to 300 young math and science wizards from 12 countries made their way to participate in the 8th International Mathematics and Science Competition (IMSO) for Primary School Students held in Naga City, Philippines on September 2- 6, 2011.
Other than the Philippines which sent 78 contestants coming from the teams of National Capital Region, Naga City, Province and Region 4A, the participating countries like China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand also fielded their contestants for both competitions.
The IMSO is an individual competition consisting of two parts for each subject area and they are theoretical and exploration problems for mathematics and theoretical and experimental problems for science. The problems are constructed based on mathematics and science elementary school curricula, reference books and other relevant sources which cover intellectual reasoning and creativity It is aimed at improving competencies and developing talent, interest, intellectual capacity and skills of the primary school students in science and mathematics.
Overall, Thailand won 7 gold, 13 silver, and 4 bronze medals, while the Philippines got 7 gold, 12 silver and 38 bronze medals. Singapore got 7 gold (correction on original text: should be 6 gold) and 6 silver medals, followed by Indonesia with 4 gold, 4 silver, and 7 bronze medals; China with 3 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals; Sri Lanka with 2 gold, 7 silver, and 9 bronze medals; Taiwan with 2 gold, 5 silver, and 6 bronze medals; South Africa with 2 silver and 7 bronze medals; South Korea with 1 gold and 1 silver medals; Malaysia with 4 bronze medals; Iran with 2 bronze medals, and India with 1 bronze medal.
Dylan Toh Shan Hong and Tan Shane of Singapore shone the brightest when they were awarded with huge golden cup trophies for ending up as overall champions in math and science respectively.
