FAQ for Candidates
What are psychometric tests?
The General Ability Test is an example of psychometric tests. Psychometric tests are meant to be objective measures of one's ability, regardless of one's cultural and academic background. These tests are different from school examinati** as they are not meant to assess how much you have learnt at school. For this reason, such objective means of assessment are employed as means of fair assessment of each student.
Why do I have to take the General Ability Test?
The General Ability Test is a psychometric test that provides an indication of intellectual aptitude that is not necessarily assessed in school examinati** but which is important for academic performance. This information about your aptitude, together with other information such as academic information and CCA records, will help the school to decide your suitability for admission.
What does the General Ability Test entail?
The test uses diagrams to measure non-verbal reasoning and problem-solving, independently of one's cultural or academic background. All the information needed to solve each problem is presented within each diagram, so you do not have to depend on vocabulary, mathematical or reading skills to answer the questi**.
Is the General Ability Test an IQ test?
The General Ability Test is not an IQ test. It is a psychometric test of non-verbal reasoning ability. This is an aspect of intelligence that is less affected by one's cultural and academic background.
How will my level of performance on the General Ability Test be determined?
Your performance is determined by comparing your score with other applicants who have taken the same test in Singapore. Additional information is also provided by comparing you with United States students of your age.
If I do not do well, does it mean that I do not stand a chance in gaining admission?
Your results on the General Ability Test only reflect certain aspects of you, so it would c**titute only a part of your profile. This will be c**idered with other information such as academic records, CCA records and entrance examination results when the school selects its students.
How do I prepare for the General Ability Test?
As the test is not meant to assess how much you have learnt in school, you do not need to make any special preparation or study. Nonetheless, as with any other test, it would be good if you are in a relatively relaxed but alert frame of mind - so try to get a good rest the night before!
How long is the General Ability Test?
The entire test session should take about 1 hour. This includes briefing and instructi** before the test. However, please ensure that you arrive at least 30 - 45 minutes before the start of your test session for registration.
What must I bring along for the test?
All you need when taking the test is a 2B pencil and an eraser. In addition, you may want to bring along a watch to monitor your time and a sweater in case it gets cold in the test hall. You will also need to bring along your photo ID (E.g. IC, Bus Pass) for registration. Calculators, mobile phones and pagers are not allowed in the test hall. |
