Singapore gained her independence through an unexpected twist of events. Banking on the advantages of a merger with then independent Malaya, Lee Kuan Yew thought this move will guarantee his exit from British colonisation. Exit, he did, but not to the backbone of Malaya. Tengku abdul Rahman, prime minister of Malaysia, renamed with the inclusion of Singapore, ejected Singapore from the federation due to his stigmatic fear of racial unbalance. Plagued with the lack of natural resources, constant rivalry between various racial groups and a wide array of problems, Lee withdrew himself into the shadows of his political party and lived in seclusion for some time trying to come to terms to his predicament. He felt very responsible for implicating the entire island of people and sought solace in a sancturary. Determined to rectify the devastating mistake, Lee rose from his state of depression and came forth to capitalise on his most precious national asset; human resources. Lee went on to market Singapore as an up to date, well trained workforce which served as an attraction for the international investors. But what really brought them in was the cost of maintaining the workforce and the virtually strike-free condition. Investors poured in with cash and technology. Lee no longer believed that education is a privilege and consistantly upgraded his people to keep them far from being obsolete. Aided by some of the most remarkable pioneers like Dr Goh Keng Swee, Lee elevated Singapore from a lowly out-casted island into a highly efficient country that is also peaceful. While many Malaysian Bumis continued mucking away at the expense of unfair social benefits, Lee controversially refused to adopt welfare policies of our old British colonial masters and thus built up an unprecedented self reliant character in Singapore despite the rapid development in wealth and stability. This helped to prevent the country from sinking into laziness whereby people take government assistance for granted. Keeping corruption at bay was also one of his strategies by implementing a competitive pay structure and maintain integrity with strict enforcement against such compromisation, Lee managed to control the reduction of government authorities into less desirable elements within his management structure. This offered the country effective governance which in turn propels the nation forward. Though many of his policies were scrutinized today as controversies, no one can doubt that the benefits enjoyed by most of the Singaporeans today were fruits of Lee’s mentally labourious dedication. The initial toils that blighted the painful structuring has conceived and given birth to the first world nation we have the luxury of enjoying today. |
