SINGAPORE: A company director was sentenced to eight weeks' imprisonment for making false declarations in work permit applications.
Lim Seong Ong, Director of Asia Link Marine Industries, had stated in his applications that his company was making Central Provident Fund contributions to local workers in active employment.
This was not the case, and the Manpower Ministry said the "phantom worker" figures were given by Lim to inflate the foreign worker entitlement of the company in relation to the company's local workforce.
Lim faced 100 charges under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (EFMA) of which 10 were proceeded on.
The offence is punishable with a fine not exceeding $15,000 and/or up to 12 months' jail, or both.
The company was also fined $8,000 for failing to pay the salary and overtime payments to its workers.
