$0.40+$0.60=$1, which is the difference of the cost of the book and the pencil
$10-$1*3=$7, which is the total cost of the items if the 3 books are pencils
$7/10=$0.70, as there will be 7+3=10 pencils after you change the cost of the books to the cost of the pencils
a) each pencil cost $0.70
$10+$0.70+$0.60=$11.30
b) He had $11.30 at first
