1:52 祂叫有权柄的失位、叫卑贱的升高;

How to deal with disappointment, painful and disheartening news.

Matthew 1: Joseph Accepts JESUS as His SON

18 This is how the birth of JESUS the MESSIAH came about: HIS mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the HOLY SPIRIT. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the LORD appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the HOLY SPIRIT. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name JESUS, because HE will save HIS people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfil what the LORD had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him IMMANUEL” (which means “GOD with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the LORD had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave HIM the name JESUS.

To find examples of wise, godly reactions to disappointment, you’re more likely to turn to Psalms than to Matthew. But the very first chapter in the New Testament tells the story of an upright man’s reaction to painful and disheartening news.

Joseph—JESUS’ earthly father—was a righteous person. A godly man wants a wife who shares his desire to honour and obey the LORD, and Scripture indicates that Mary was exactly that sort of woman (Luke 1: 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the LORD would fulfil HIS promises to her!”

Mary’s Song

46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the LORD
47 and my spirit rejoices in GOD my SAVIOUR,
48 for HE has been mindful
of the humble state of HIS servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49  for the MIGHTY ONE has done great things for me—
    holy is HIS name.
50 HIS mercy extends to those who fear HIM,
     from generation to generation.
51 HE has performed mighty deeds with HIS arm;
HE has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 HE has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53 HE has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 HE has helped HIS servant Israel,
     remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”)

So imagine how stunned Joseph must have been when Mary returned from a long visit with her relative Elizabeth and told him that she was pregnant. Moreover, she was claiming no man had touched her.

Any way Joseph looked at the situation, it appeared grim. And yet Matthew 1: (20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the LORD appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the HOLY SPIRIT.)—in other words, he sought a wise, righteous response. GOD entered Joseph’s life in a dramatic way to confirm Mary’s story and put a stop to his “quiet annulment” plans.

The LORD turned Joseph’s mourning into joy. Mary had told the truth—strange and startling as it was. The couple would bear the intense public censure of an early pregnancy, but Joseph stopped thinking about what others would say. GOD had blessed work for him: to raise the Messiah alongside a faithful woman.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Followers of CHRIST should seek a godly response to disappointments we face. Since the LORD always has a plan (Jeremiah 29: 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.), the wisest reaction is to anticipate the good HE can do and await HIS timing. GOD certainly blessed Joseph for his willingness to “seek first HIS kingdom” (Matt. 6: 33 But seek first HIS kingdom and HIS righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.).

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge HIM, and HE will make your paths straight.” –Proverbs 3:5-6

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” –John 14:27

GOD desires for our hearts to be committed to seeking HIM. But when you think about seeking the LORD, what kinds of things do you find yourself saying to HIM or asking of HIM? Often times, we may seek GOD for what HE can give us instead of simply seeking HIM for being GOD and what we can do for HIM! Now this doesn’t mean we can’t ask HIM for what we need. HE does want to provide for us and HE even longs to bless us abundantly, but HE wants us to have the right motives when we ask of HIM.

“I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.” –Jeremiah 17:10

In 2 Chronicles, we note how blessed Solomon was as a king. (I encourage you to read all of 2 Chronicles 1) He sought GOD with all of his heart, and when GOD told him to ask whatever he wished, Solomon’s heart was right towards GOD and he humbly asked for GOD’s wisdom, that he would lead the people in the ways of GOD as he reigned as king. Solomon didn’t ask for riches or for fame, but instead asked for the very heart of GOD. GOD honoured him and because of Solomon’s humility, he was not only given GOD’s wisdom, but was also given those things he did not ask for. When we come to GOD with a humble heart and desire the things HE desires, HIS blessings will naturally begin to flow into our lives without us even having to ask HIM!

“Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” -2 Chronicles 1:10

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask GOD, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” –James 1:5

If you have trouble with desiring the things of GOD, the first step is to ask HIM to give you the desire to desire HIS heart. HIS will! Reading HIS WORD and spending time in HIS presence will help us to develop a heart after HIM and HIS desires instead of our own. We will begin to walk in the spirit, going after the things of GOD, and going less after worldly desires. We will no longer be satisfied by temporary things but will desire things that are eternal.

“So then, just as you received CHRIST JESUS as LORD, continues to live in HIM, rooted and built up in HIM, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” –Colossians 2:6-7

“May the GOD of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our LORD JESUS, that great SHEPHERD of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing HIS will, and may HE work in us what is pleasing to HIM, through JESUS CHRIST, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” –Hebrews 13:20-21

GOD cares deeply for us, and HE knows what we need, even if we may not know how HE will provide it. When we learn to ask GOD for the things on HIS heart, we will find ourselves more at peace than we ever were before. Our character will reflect GOD’s character and others will want to know what is different about us. As true Christians, we are carriers of GOD’s presence and we can help show others the joy, peace, and satisfaction there is in serving GOD and trusting HIM with our lives. HE is a good GOD! Seek HIM and you will lack no good thing!

ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS:

If "Faith Alone" saves, will Satan be saved?

QUESTION: John 3:16 states that "For GOD so loved the world, that HE gave HIS only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in HIM, shall not perish but have eternal life." Well, Satan believes in GOD; Satanists believe in GOD. Do they perish? Yes, they do. This verse basically states that if you believe in GOD, you'll go to Heaven. Yet the Bible also indicates that one must live a life accordingly, and that you have to be devoted. I'm confused.

ANSWER: Hi! You ask an excellent question. When says JESUS in John 3:16 "whoever believes in Him shall not perish," notice that he didn't say "whoever believes 'ONLY’...shall not perish." Many religious groups today affirm that all you have to do is "believe only" and you are saved at the very first instant of faith without ever having to do anything else. The New Testament doesn't teach this. In fact, James chapter 2 shows conclusively that "faith alone" is insufficient to save.

James 2:14 "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?"

James directly poses the question under discussion: Can a person claim faith yet not obey GOD and still be saved? In order to avoid the question, some denominational people deny that James is talking about salvation here. They should underline the word "save" in the verse: "Can faith save him?" James is indeed talking about salvation.

James 2: 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Next, he illustrates the absurdity of "faith only" by showing how pointless it is for someone to have good will toward a person in need, yet to do nothing for him. He concludes from his illustration:

" In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead " (2:17)

James 2:18 "But someone will say, 'You have faith, and I have works.' Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works."

James deals with the person who still thinks he can separate faith from works and be pleasing to GOD. It's just as wrong to think "salvation is by faith without works" as it is to think "salvation is by works without faith." Both faith and works are necessary to be saved. James offers a challenge: "Show me your faith without your works," which is an impossibility. "..and I will show you my faith by my works." James understood that his own true faith was demonstrated by doing the works GOD commanded.

James 2: 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.  20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?

In verse 19, James directly answers your question: demons believe but they are not saved. The devil and his demons most certainly believe in Christ, but they obviously don't obey Him. Therefore they are lost. Anyone else who has faith alone without further obedience will also be lost.

"But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?" (2:20)

James 2: 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?

James offers examples of how doing the works of GOD is an important part of real faith. Abraham obeyed GOD by his offering of Isaac (Genesis 22:1-19). Rahab was justified by works when she protected Joshua's spies (Joshua 2:1-24; 6:25). About Abraham's act of obedience, James says:

"Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?" (2:22)

Only after Abraham heeded the voice of God was it said that he truly "believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." (2:23)

James 2:26"For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also"

We can easily distinguish between the living and the dead. A body that is physically dead is still and does nothing without a spirit inside it. But while the spirit still resides in the body, it is evident that the body is alive. Likewise, faith without works is a dead faith. Faith with works is a living faith. What kind of faith do you have?

Conclusion

Yes, belief in Christ is absolutely necessary to be saved, and that's JESUS' emphasis in John 3:16. But then true faith continues to obey CHRIST as LORD, and that's James' emphasis in James 2:14-26. The passages don't contradict. They both teach important facts about salvation. James 2:14-26. The passages don't contradict. They both teach important facts about salvation.

Waiting for Answers to Prayers

Psalm 33:

20 We wait in hope for the LORD;
HE is our help and our shield.
21 In HIM our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in HIS holy name.
22 May YOUR unfailing love be with us, LORD,
even as we put our hope in YOU.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Scripture makes it clear that our heavenly FATHER hears and answers prayer. Yet we all experience times when, though we pray for GOD to act right away, HE does not. What are some of the reasons for the delay?

At times the LORD sees that our attention is misdirected. Our relationship with HIM should have priority over any earthly matter (Mark 12: 30 Love the LORD your GOD with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.). Yet minds and prayers can become so fixed upon a need that our gaze shifts away from HIM. The FATHER may delay HIS answer until we refocus on HIM. In other situations, GOD waits because the timing is not right for granting our request. Perhaps certain events must happen first, or people’s thinking needs to be changed.

There are also seasons when the LORD wants to stretch and grow our faith. One of the ways HE accomplishes that is by having us watch for His response. The HOLY SPIRIT will work in these times of waiting to mature us and bring forth righteous fruit (Gal. 5: 22 But the fruit of the SPIRIT is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.).

Other reasons are a wrong motive for our request (James 4: 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.) and the practice of habitual sin. We all fall short when it comes to GOD’s standard of holiness, but some of us persist in a lifestyle of disobedience. The LORD may delay HIS answer so HE can prompt us to confess our sin and turn back to HIM.

Waiting on the LORD isn’t easy—faith and trust are needed (Heb. 11: 1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.). If HIS answer is delayed, check that 1) Make sure your focus is on HIM, 2) your motive for asking is GOD-honouring, and 3) you aren’t practicing habitual sin. Then believe that HIS response will be for your good and HIS glory.

A Thirst for GOD

Psalm 63: 1 You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.

2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

6 On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
7 Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8 I cling to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

A personal relationship with GOD through JESUS CHRIST has the potential to be more intimately satisfying than any earthly connection. King David recorded his experience in Psalm 63. Our heavenly FATHER wants to have a loving bond with us just as HE did with David.

Making a firm commitment to know HIM is the first step, which takes priority above all other matters. David described his passion to know GOD as an intense thirst (v. 1); the apostle Paul likened his dedication in pursuing the LORD to a race (Heb. 12: 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on JESUS, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before HIM HE endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of GOD.). When we pledge ourselves to the lordship of CHRIST and seek after HIM with our hearts and minds, we will find our souls becoming satisfied.

Once we resolve to follow diligently after the LORD, our next step is to spend time in HIS WORD. The Bible is GOD’s revelation of HIMSELF and HIS plan for the world. Making time to read and meditate on Scripture is essential for every believer. That’s how we learn who GOD is, how HE works, and what HE desires for us and for the body of CHRIST, when we strive to know and understand a biblical passage, the HOLY SPIRIT will make the meaning spring to life. GOD is pleased by true followers who make it their goal to deepen their relationship with HIM.
