<H4 0cm 0cm 0pt"><H2 0cm 0cm 0pt"><U>Me Gunung Ledang (Mr. Ophir.)<p></p></U></H2><H3 0cm 0cm 0pt">Getting there and away<p></p></H3></H4><H4 0cm 0cm 0pt"><EM></EM> </H4><H4 0cm 0cm 0pt"><EM>By bus</EM></H4><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"><EM> <p></p></EM></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">From <a href="http://sps.nus.edu.sg/~lohtsely/travelinfo.htm#malaysia" target="_blank" >Larkin bus terminal</A> in Johor Bahru, take the bus to Segamat (every 45min, RM10) or to Tangkak (I have only seen the 3.30pm bus, if there are any others, do inform me). The journey to Segamat or Tangkak from JB is approximately 3.5 hours.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">For the return trip, there is a bus that goes directly to Singapore leaving Segamat at 5pm. Otherwise, buses to Larkin leave hourly. I have not been to Tangkak, so am unable to furnish details on the bus times.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"><I>By train </I>(thanks Yong Kian!! – [email protected])<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">Getting to Segamat by train,<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">1) train ticket purchased at JB station to Segamat costs RM16 per head. (I purchased the ticket for the last train [11.30pm], so i guess the rate is slightly different with different time.)<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">2) travelling time takes about 3 hrs<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">3) return train ticket to JB station costs RM 20 per head (to Singapore costs RM 21 per head), time of departure is 10.40am. (see the different rate at different time)<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">Once you are at Tangkak or Segamat, you can take the local bus 65 (first bus 7am) from the local bus station to the Gunung Ledang Resort, and walk 1km to the resort entrance. From Segamat, the bus journey is 45min and costs RM2.50 (non a/c), or RM2.70 (a/c). Buses stop operation around 5pm.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">You can also take a taxi, which costs RM25-30 from Segamat, and takes 30min.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><H5 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT size=5>Where to stay</FONT></H5><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><H4 0cm 0cm 0pt"><EM>Gunung Ledang Resort</EM></H4><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">The entire mountain is under the jurisdiction of the resort. You can either choose to stay at the base of Ledang in the resort chalets (expensive) and enjoy the waterfalls, or proceed to any one of the 4 campsites along the trail to the summit. Bring your own tents and food along for the summit climb. You are on your own there.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><H3 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT size=3>If you want to summit or hike up Ledang</FONT></H3><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><H4 0cm 0cm 0pt"><EM>Registering</EM></H4><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">You need to register at the entrance of the park if you wish to summit. After which, proceed to the climbers’ registration office near the resort reception area (follow the signs) to pay the usual fees.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">Camping fees: RM10 per person per night, for students is RM 5 per head. so far, no proof is required. :)<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">You also need to put RM50 as deposit for trash, and have to declare all potential non biodegradable trash you are carrying. There is a RM10 fine for any item you leave behind.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><H4 0cm 0cm 0pt"><EM>The hike</EM></H4><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">Normally, most hikers camp at Camp 4 to attempt the summit. Camp is a 2 hour hike from the base of the mountain. The trail is obvious and marked by red/white striped tape. DO NOT climb the waterfalls or walk near the rocks. They are deceptively slippery and quite a few fatalities have occurred because of carelessness.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">From Camp 4, the hike to the summit takes 3.5-4 hours one way. Remember to bring lots of water. There is only one other water point from Camp 4 and it can get HOT.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><H4 0cm 0cm 0pt"><EM>Thoughts</EM></H4><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"> <p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt">Gunung Ledang is really scenic. Waterfalls, flowing streams, jungle…..but all these are marred by the unsightly presence of garbage. Please be mindful of the environment and take all trash out with you. Think of how beautiful it would be if the garbage were gone from the mountain. It only takes a little effort on your part to compact and carry your trash down with you. Generations of hikers and the native flora and fauna would be extremely thankful.<p></p></P><P 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman"> <p></p></FONT></P> |
