really? i thought i takes 2 years to complete o/a level courses and another year for exam preparation..3 years in total. but i spend my 4 years in high school (because i was in an american international school).=)

well, back to the topic, i think singapore has adopt british english as its offical language. But the colloquial language is a combination of many different languages due to its muti-cultural background, which makes up a strong back-bone for singapore's growth. =)

他们的发音很不标准,是singlish,所以你要适应他们的发音还需要时间,但不要去学他们的发音。

Instead of 'Singlish', if I might call it SIngapore Vernacular English (SVE) by analogy with AAVE (美国黑人英语) it's a natural development of English spoken as a second language, at least from a sociolinguistic point of view. It's pronunciation is neither General American nor Standard Southern British (标准南方英式英语), e.g. Singapore speakers trying to imitate American pronunciation do not pronounce 'new' /nu:/ (国际音标注音) but use the British pronunciation instead and say /nju:/ and do the same for words like 'tune' /tju:n/ instead of American /tu:n/. Sentence intonation (语句声调) in SVE does not have the rhythm( 韵律) of native English which is stressed-timed. SVE is syllable-timed, i.e. every syllabe (音节) is distinctly pronounced and weak forms (弱音) are generally not used. This phenomenon is attributable to the fact that local languages (including Chinese) are all syllable-timed.
