</TD></TR>
<TR vAlign=top>

<P><FONT size=2>Traditional Chinese Monochord, also named duxian paoqin in Chinese, is a kind of traditional instrument handed down from ancient China. Its recorded history goes back to the Shang Dynasty ( c. 1600 ~ 1100 BC ) . In the light of the saying of the Up for Omissions ( shiyi ji ) published in Southern Dynasty ( 386~589 AD ) , it is said that “ Musician Yan was an official in charge of the administration of music affairs in the age of Xuan-yuan, the Yellow emperor ( Huang Di ) , and by the time of Shang Dynasty several top musical officials were assigned as a leading-group to compile the music between the p eriods of Three Legendary Emperors and the Five Legendary Rulers. … While the wire of Single- c hord ( yi-xian-qin ) being fingered upon, all Gods of the land would always go up into the sky; while a kind of pure temperament being played on a bamboo pitch-pipe, all Gods of the heaven would always go down toward the land.” And in the New History of the Tang Dynasty goes down another record that says g ourd- s haped Monochord ( duxian paoqin ) was made up of mottled bamboo without ornaments, its wood head by got carved as dragon-shaped head, and its string stringed on the crown of the head without peg. The record also says, “ in addition, the instrument is made covered with a half-gourd which is decorated with colored drawings and equipped with a bronze bowl. Decorated with coiling dragon pattern, the Qin was 100 centimeters long or so, and its head curved as an arch is 6.66 centimeters long and its string tied on its waist crosses from the head through the bronze bowl and half-gourd. ” a ccordingly, it is sure that the former record concerned about g ourd- s haped Monochord the duxian paoqin and the latter about Dragon- h ead Monochord the longshou duxianqin . Furthermore, the tuning pitch and temperament of this instrument also went down in the New History of the Tang Dynasty which reads: “ its string responds to the Greater Accumulation ( tai-cu ) , ” According to the conversion between antique and modern temperament system, ancient Greater Accumulation ( tai-cu ) pitch equals to present key of “ D ” . and again, “ Although this instrument has a single-string, it possesses the five notes of the Chinese pentatonic scale. Its melody is so beautiful as to let the Emperor to promote it to all over the world. ”

Since thousands years ago, fortunately, the zither has been handed by the Jing nationality who has been living on three isles, namely Wanwei, Wutou and s hanxin under the administration of Dongxing city, Guangxi. And also because its pitch has fitted in perfectly with the tone of the Jing dialect, along with time went by, it has gradually evolved as traditional musical instrument of the Jing nationality. Hence at present, it becomes one of the most popular musical instruments of Chinese minorities.

The artist of Guangxi Song and Dance Ensemble Mr. Li Ping has, by the spirit of tens of years of studying , saving and promoting Chinese nationalities instrumental music, researched and created a speeded-up teaching method of the Chinese monochord performance and hence made the folk instrument have its own performance rules, on the basis of completion of various traditional performance skills of the monochord. Afterwards, Mr. Li and Ms Zhou w enjuan ( Zhou z iying ) , the latter is a Chinese woman now living in America and a managing director of Los Angels Overseas Communication Center of Chinese Monochord Art, America, have jointly manufactured out dragon-head monochord zither series, namely model I, II, III and model IV. The kind of monochord zither has various beautiful shapes featuring the combination of Chinese tradition and modern spirit. And China Patent Bureau has patented such result with patent number 03335857.5. </FONT></P>
