OVERVIEW

Lancaster University is one of Britain’s top 10 research universities and is consistently rated highly for the quality of its teaching. With a lively campus environment, Lancaster University offers a great social life without the impersonality of a large city. It is well placed for travelling around the UK and is within reach of the world famous Lake District. Manchester is about one hour away by train, and is serviced by a direct link from Lancaster Station.
The University itself has an excellent record of achievement in the government Research Assessment Exercises. It is situated within a safe, friendly and attractive campus environment with an international community of students and staff, and can guarantee on-campus accommodation for all single, overseas students. Lancaster has a relatively low cost of living and is easily accessible by air, road and rail.

Academic strengths
Lancaster University is consistently rated highly for the quality of its teaching. Departments are organised into five faculties: Applied Sciences, Environmental and Natural Sciences, Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences and the Management School. 71 per cent of staff at Lancaster are in departments ranked 5* or 5 for their research quality.
5* rated subjects include business and management, physics, sociology and statistics, whilst the subjects rated 5 include applied social science, computing, educational research, English, environmental science, European languages and cultures, law, linguistics, psychology and religious studies. Subjects that gained a rating of 4 include biological sciences, communications systems, engineering, history, politics and international relations, pure mathematics and theatre studies.
Facilities
The library is in the centre of the campus in Alexandra Square and contains over one million items and currently subscribes to nearly 3,000 journals.
Campus facilities include supermarkets, a bakery, bookshops and newsagents, a hairdresser, a post office and two banks. There is also a wide selection of restaurants, snack bars and fast food take-aways offering a range of choices to suit all tastes. The modern sports centre has a swimming pool, sports hall, squash courts, weight training rooms, dance facilities, sauna and solarium, and a rock climbing wall. Outdoor facilities include football, rugby and hockey pitches, cricket fields, tennis courts, and areas for golf, athletics and archery.
Student life
Student Support Services co-ordinate all of the welfare facilities on campus. The student support services team provides both general and specialist guidance and support to students. The team includes an international student adviser who is able to offer specialist information and advice on subjects such as immigration to international students.
There are many sporting and non-sporting clubs and societies and opportunities to meet people with similar interests and pursuits. These range from cultural and religious societies such as the Chinese Society and Japanese Students’ Society to hiking and theatre. |
