Everyone loves compliment, praise and curry favor. We shall be more generous in using them, not only to please the others, but also to help ourselves to be more sociable. I think just a simple note may get you a long way, like "your blouse/pants/skirt/shirt/jacket looks stunning, where did you get it?" or "I couldn't have done this without your help, you are very much appreciated." You don't even need to use fanciful adjectives to get the person on your side. So start using them now, at least once a day!
regarding the arguments about chinese people's different pronunciation of english words, i used to have that kind of concern, not only on pronunciation but also the accent. My audience are my students, and you can imagine how critical the students nowadays can be and how embarrassing for teachers to speak "improper" english. But little by little, i feel that we do have an advantage, that is the phonetics. Compared to the local students, we can pronounce a new word rather accurately based on our knowledge of international phonetics (the local students have limited knowledge on that, don't know why they don't include that part in their enlighs education). And sometimes I realize that the common pronunciation may not be the correct one, for example, some teachers pronounce "joule" as "jone" while the actual pronunciation shall be "ju:l", and "Harber Process" as "ha:be" not "heibe" (hope you get what i mean)[em01] Anyway my point is that even when you mispronounce certain word, take it as a learning opportunity and always check the phonetics in the dictionary to find the proper pronunciation. I find "kingsoft powerword" is a very useful software in that area. As for the accent while speaking, well, you can't help it no matter how hard you try, and i think the accent gives us the uniqueness and it may not be the disadvantage. ( people may think you are overseas educated because we tend to acquire certain american accent ). So have more confidence in speaking and one day you will have an edge over the locals. [em01]
