Music blared and marquees flutter; even the dust began picking up a little in anticipation of the Auto Gymkhana competitions that were waiting to begin. Bikini-clad promoters strode in three inches-high heels and mini skirts, turning heads and seeking camera attention.

Highly-skilled drivers sent dust flying as they negotiated complex courses, maneuvering everyday cars tactfully around bright, orange pylons. The competition, organised by the Singapore Motor Sports Association, was one of the main highlights of the day.

A passing shower in the late morning failed to dampen the spirit of exhibitors and visitors alike; more vehicles and people began pouring in as the weather cleared by mid-day. Spectators braved the dirt and grime, and large puddles to catch showcases of D1-styled drifting actions displayed by top drifters from Singapore and Malaysia. Many were armed with photographing gears to capture a piece of the action.

Being in the front seat was an exchange of grasps between adrenalin rushes and swirling visions of the heaven and earth. The eminent thought shooting through my mind then was the level of concentration the driver had to be equipped with at all time. It all seemed so easy peasy from the outside until you plunk into the hard bracket seat. One miscue can turn such graceful high speed controlled-skidding into a fatal accident.

My bespectacled driver who looked no older than 35 (though he really is 40-odd), have dabbled in the sport for over a decade. Speaking as he revved up the engine, he explained intently why drifting is mostly done using rear wheel drives (think Nissan Silvia S15).

On top of that, the mega event acted as an opportunity for car enthusiasts to mingle and discover more about dolling up their rides, inside-out.

ONE.MOTORING was amongst the dozen of exhibitors promoting their services and wares at the carnival. New and existing members were each given a goodie bag containing magazines, air freshener, health product, game CD, information leaflets, and water for the scorching heat.
