En... I am currently a teacher in a pri school... teaching chinese.. just started for 3 weeks! XD

I also think that the stress that you need to bear is very much depending on which school you are teaching... I actually feel that I am already quite lucky.. my school de principals and teacher all very kind and passionate about teaching.. They are willing to teach you how to teach, hardly hear any politics in the school.. Besides, the school is a traditional Christian school, pupils mostly came from Eng speaking family, so their Chinese standard is.... er.... So you dont need to prepare a lot of difficult stuffs for them and aim high in exam, dont hv this kind of stress.. The school itself doesnt hv a culture or peer pressure that you need to "act" hardworking and stay in the school until 5-6pm... (like my fren teaching in other school said), so whenever your job in school is done, you can leave, can bring books back home to mark and do lesson plan at home. So the benefit of being a teacher is time flexibility, sometimes I even leave at 1pm.. Especially good for those who still want to pursue individual learning, like going for master, learn music, etc.. For me, the situation is even better cos the school is just opposite my house, and I only teach 2 classes, 15 period a week.. Sounds really good right.. This is what I feel in the first week too.

HOWEVER, though official working hour is 7am-1pm, usually in the afternoon the school will have: teacher meeting, CCA, remedial class for you to attend.... So usually after everything it's already near 4pm, everyday. Then you need to mark books. maybe take 1-2 hour a day. Do lesson planning, 1-2 hour a day, which is a MUST especially for new teachers.. so, altogether you can calculate how many working hours you have, definitely wun be lesser than other job.. Now what I feel is that you must really have passion if you want to teach, cos the job is to HELP other ppl ( the kids) so what you want to do for them could be indefinite.. You can choose to spend many hours in preparing your lesson, make them more interesting and benefit the pupils more if you want.. I dono is it the students nowadays have become very different from our time or for other reasons, last time when teacher occasionally play a small game with us, or bring us to do something different, we will be quite excited liao... then i feel that nowadays de kids, they are too used to computer all those, too manja already, then they WON'T listen to you if you just teach traditionally... they just act like they are at home and ignore the teacher (me, sob sob) run here run there as if they are deaf or blind.. As they are all from Eng speaking famiily, I even wonder if they can understand my CHINESE when i scolded them... very difficult to catch their attention. Hence "satisfaction" is low. Hence need to keep preparing lesson to make the kids LIKE chinese lesson more, hence it's stressful and I somehow feel that I am over-worked and wanna giv up liao.

sob sob

So the conclusion is, dont go into teaching only if you want a stable, low workload, decent salary job. You really need passion and perhaps, some talent.. A good teacher is a good entertainer, which can engage the students in his lesson..
|
