Seaspan announced on its website that it has signed contracts for the construction of four 10,000 TEU class newbuilding containerships at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (YZJ).
The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2014 and will be constructed using Seaspan's fuel efficient SAVER design.
Concurrently with executing the newbuilding contracts, Seaspan also signed long term, fixed-rate time charters for these vessels with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.
The prices for the newbuilds are not disclosed, but recall that YZJ had earlier signed a US$0.7b contract with Seaspan in Jun 2011 to build seven 10,000TEU containerships with options for 18 additional ones. Based on this, each unit is valued at US$100m, but we would confirm with management if there are any changes to pricing. We are estimating gross margins of 8-9% for the vessels.
For the remaining unexercised options, we think that Seaspan is likely to wait till it has found charterers (like Mitsui in the above contract) before committing to more newbuilds.
