i just feel shame when:

you are having a conversation with europeans, australians or americans, while they totally can't understand what are you talking about!

you are back to china, your friends are asking you to speck english to them to show how well you have learnt in a foreign land, and you say," don wan la!"

being a chinese speaking person, i am so proud of myself that i can also speak good english to everyone, even though i have been here in singapore for past 6 years.

so my friends, wake up and doing something about your english, let us work together to show the stupid singaporeans that this generation of chinese can beat them in anything we do.

Hi my friend!

It's great that you are able to speak good English. Keep it up! Indeed, don't learn Singlish if you could help it, and looks like you could. In Singapore, there is ample opportunity to learn either good or bad English, personal choice can make a big difference.

Is "looking down on someone" (for whatever reason) a trait that you have chosen to adopt and develop?

Yes, anyone would reasonably expect any generation of mainland Chinese to beat every generation of Singaporeans in everything. Singaporeans have always been, and will always be disadvantaged compared to the mainland Chinese, whether in our genetics, natural resources or inheritance. Our first Prime Minister has already said this in 1978 when he met Mr Deng Xiao Ping:

"I had told Deng over dinner in 1978 in Singapore that we, the Singapore Chinese, were the descendants of illiterate landless peasants from Guangdong and Fujian in south China, whereas the scholars, mandarins and literati had stayed and left their progeny in China. There was nothing that Singapore had done which China could not do, and do better."

come on, singlish is just a slang, there is nothing wrong with it, it'sjust like for an instance in Beijing people speak "Beijing Hua" insteadof speak formal mandarin ......
there's no right or wrong in a language

as a communicational tool, language is up to u to use as far as your idea is successfully conveyed. so use Singlish (or rather English with Singaporean accent) would never at fault in this island.

as for your own practice and study of English, you might need to exercise constrain on the words sentences and accent of what come our from your mouth..

but as an explicit phenomenon of a culture.. dear Little Fish Prince, you have just denied yourself a chance to involve and explore a culture which is foreign to u..

Once in Rome, do as the Romes do is always the advice......
