I am really sorry about the terrible experience of Redboy in Singapore. I believe Redboy will be an outstanding student in any university. Unfortunately, he met in such a horrible mentor in NUS. Wish he has a good luck in the future.

However, I have to clarify some points about Dr. Cai and Dr. Yu, and their supervisors A/P Yang Xiaohang and Prof. Chia as well as Chinese PIs in IMCB.

1) Dr. Cai spent more than 6 years to gain his PhD degree. It is common in the field of Biological Science. For example, the average period of PhD degree in Baylor College of Medicine or Rockefellor Univeristy in USA is also about 6 years. In NUS, the PhD time is extended to 4 or 4.5 years from 3 years because NUS start following the USA system but not Bristish system again;

2) Prof. Chia and Dr. Yang are their supervisors. Prof. Chia indeed went back to UK for some time (about 2000-2004). During this period, Dr. Yang was in charge of the student's dissertation work but Prof. Chia still give some supervision to them. Both Cai (2003) and Yu (2000) pusblished the top journal in CELL which let them get the YI in TLL. In these Cai's paper (2003), Dr. Yang and Prof. Chia are the co-corresponding authors. Cai and Yu also contributed to other good papers after Prof. Chia was in UK. In most of the papers, Dr. Yang and Prof. Chia are also the co-correponding authors. They appeared to collaborate very well.

3) YI, namely young investigator, is actually a junior principle investigator although the salary is lower. However, they are in the same academic tenure track and have the same right to run the lab including recruiting post-doc and students. It is very rare that a fresh graduate entering the academic track without a solid postdoc experience.

4) There are many Chinese PIs in IMCB. Many of them graduated from the USA universities under CUSBA program in early 1980s. Most of them have a good academic reputation and are kind, although strict to the students. For example, the vice director of IMCB, prof. Hong Wangjin and A/P Yang Xiaohang, both or them have really good work in their field.

5) Unfortunately, after A*Star took IMCB, they prohibited IMCB recruiting students from mainland and India, who produce most publications in IMCB before. Now, the academic record of IMCB has gone down whatever the quality or number of the papers. Therefore, the future of IMCB is not so bright at all.
|
