Just to inform you guys.

Many of the verses that you encounter in Singapore are supposed to be pronounced in Hokkien dialect or some other Southern Dialect. And if you do that you will find many of the verses meaningful & sound beautiful.

Example: 美美 in hokkien pronouniation Sui2 Sui4. Singaporean usage of 美美 is correct because many Hokkien's spoken form are of double in nature. Their usage is different from Northern Chinese. In this case 美美 can be applied to different objects & is still correct.

There are other examples but the point is Mandarin in Singapore is different due to political circumstances & Singaporean has adopted to this situation by directly translating our mother's tongue to Mandarin. Many Chinese here do not consider Mandarin as our mother's tongue. Hokkien is our mother's tongue.

As a foreigner, if you do not appreciate this kind of differences then you have wasted your time here.

Similarly for English, many older generation tried their best to adopt to the English speaking environment as a result of political reality in this country. They try to impart their limited English skill to their young but the result is disastrous.

However, there is a large segment of the young that has chosen Singlish as a form of rebellion against Authority. Example me.

Singlish has also evolved into something bigger. A form that unite all races & religion in Singapore. Singlish is like Mandarin in China, uniting all the minority to the majority Han. Without imposing Mandarin, China would be like India with many languages. Similarly for Singlish, it is a language that make all the races feel comfortable as it is easy to learn & it is fun. It is a language we use to identify Singaporean when we are oversea too.

For newer generation, we can switch to proper English when the needs arise. Example me. I have worked with American, Australian, British, Canadian without any difficulties.

Again, as I said before, if you are unable to appreciate the difference in political reality, cultural adoption by local to the political reality then you have wasted your trip here. This is the place when East meets West & East fights West constantly.

|
