Walk the talk by educating, not warning, the students                                 http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_799717.html

MY DAUGHTER, a Raffles Girls' School student, is proud of her school. But it pains me to see her breaking down ever so often when she describes the behaviour of some of her teachers.

During a donation drive for the Old Rafflesians' Association, each student was given a card to solicit funds. Instead of telling students about the merits of the cause, one teacher warned that those who failed to collect a donation would have to stand outside the class. What value does that impart and how is character developed this way?

Students like my 15-year-old daughter are often told to develop an independent mind, speak up, volunteer and so on, but teachers must walk the talk too.

My daughter may spend more time in school than at home, but I take full responsibility for her behaviour. Teachers can help by not making it harder.

http://news.omy.sg/News/Local%2BNews/Story/OMYStory201205171511-335556.html

$300m international school to open in August

      Thu May 17 2012

SINGAPORE - Imagine a school where your child's name flashes on a board with instructions on where to drop him off when your car reaches the gate.
You are directed to a drop-off point and your child hops off for classes. When you are back to pick him up, your child's name flashes again to let him know you are there and your precious one hops back into the car.

This technology is available now, and will be implemented in a school here.

The Stamford American International School that has branded themselves as the world's most advanced school has safety as one of its top most priorities, and the above scenario is just one of the many technological features it will incorporate.

The $300 million campus located along Upper Serangoon Road was designed in close consultation with top security experts including the US Embassy.

The campus will open its doors of its permanent campus in August this year, announced Mr Brian G. Rogove, CEO of Cognita, Asia Pacific, the company that owns the school.

The campus will boasts features that "will not become standard in many others schools for another 20 years," said the company's CEO.

Cognita is one of the world's largest private education providers with 58 schools across UK, Europe and Asia.

The K-12 facility that will house 2,500 students from the ages of two to 18, will equip students from K2 to Grade 5 with iPads, while the older students will be equipped with a Macbook Pro each.

The school, which is fully wired up and wi-fi ready, aims to deliver an interactive learning environment where teaching is not limited to within the four walls of a classroom.

"Technology does feature a lot in our new campus. The environment allows for a number of new education experiences. In essence, it takes teaching outside of the classroom into a global perspective. It is extremely important to students because there's so much information available for the students to get access to effectively," said Mr Malcolm J. Kay.

An example given by Mr Malcolm is that the students will be able to watch two guest speakers at the same time and compare and contrast for an inter-disciplinary education.

The school is also the first to offer both education by American standards and in the International Baccalaureate (IB). It will also feature facilities for performing arts, computer laboratories, ionized swimming pools, indoor basketball courts and an outdoor astro-turf field.

When queried on why Singapore and not Hong Kong for such an extensive project, Mr Rogove explained that there is much greater demand among expatriates in Singapore.

Founder and chief executive of the Canadian International School (CIS), Thomas Tang had initially wanted to open the school in Hong Kong but chose Singapore due to a lack of land space in Hong Kong.

The $140 million CIS campus that opened in Jurong West earlier this year, has a current enrolment of 1,800 student and house up to 3,300 students.

Ferrari was travelling at 140kmh: ex-physics teacher

Thu May 17 2012

SINGAPORE - A former physics teacher calculated the speed that the Ferrari was travelling at before it crashed into the ComfortDelGro taxi killing three and injuring two others.

Using online tools, physics theories and graphical representations, Mr Lawrence Wee, who used to teach at Yishun Junior College, explains and concludes that the supercar was travelling at 140kmh.

The 43-year-old had initially calculated the speed to be about 110kmh but after discussing it with a colleague, he realised the supercar could have been travelling at 140kmh instead.

Said Mr Wee, "Simply put, it's measuring the distance the Ferrari travelled over the time of the video".

Making use of the real-life example to assist in educating students in everyday physics, Mr Wee told AsiaOne that he wanted to "spread and scale active learning strategies in physics education, with to aim to make learning meaningful and relevant to life".

In an e-mail to citizen journalism Stomp, a netizen who chanced upon the blog post said that his reasoning seems quite accurate.

"It seems pretty accurate, given that they managed to account for the depth perception effects and estimated the distances based on the width of the taxi, which is in roughly the same plane as the Ferrari at the point of impact," said netizen 'Little Food Steps'.

"No offence intended to any of the victims, but I thought this may be of interest to Stompers (contributors to the website) who wish to estimate how fast the Ferrari was travelling".

RI boys win 5th title in 6 years
Nicholas Neo |       The New Paper |    Fri May 18 2012

He has watched closely over them since they joined Raffles Institution (RI) under the Direct Schools Admission (DSA) scheme six years ago.

And softball teacher-in-charge Adrian Chng was delighted to see that his DSA boys - Samuel Lee, Chua Hui Fu and Mirza Muhd - played a huge part in winning another national schools title for RI.

Tuesday's boys' A division title came after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Hwa Chong Institution at the AR-JAS Sports Centre.

It was the fifth national title in a row for the trio, who have been successful every year since 2008.

Said Chng: "This title is very significant for me personally.

"When I first met them (his DSA boys), they had their own bad habits and idiosyncrasies. The improvement has been tremendous."

Chng was not short of praise for his other boys too.

He said: "As a whole, I'm pleased with the way the team performed.

"I've seen us play better, but considering all the pressure that came with being in the final, I'm happy with the way we did it."

Dominated

In Tuesday's final, RI dominated right from the beginning.

Samuel got his team off to the perfect start with a magnificent home run in the first inning.

In the second inning, RI's speedy Daniel Gn and Chandra Prakash rounded the bases to increase the lead to 3-0.

However, in the final three innings, an improved performance from Hwa Chong pitcher Edmond Chen and catcher Alston Yeong managed to stop RI from scoring any more runs.

Hwa Chong did come close to scoring though, with Yang Jia Fan and Marcel Wong hitting a few strong fly balls. But they were safely caught by RI's outfielders.

Hwa Chong's team captain Edmond felt that his team were "unlucky" not to be able to convert their chances.

He said: "They were able to catch many of our air balls, and that's how they got us out.

"Still, I think we performed up to our expectations."

Despite the win, RI's team captain Hui Fu was not satisfied.

He said: "There is a lot of room for improvement for our batting, but in terms of fielding, we are there.

"We definitely could have done better, but a win's a win."
