A student from St Joseph’s Institution International (SJI (I)) has come out tops in last year’s Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examination for mathematics.
17-year-old Nathan Darius was given the Cambridge “Top in the World” award for his performance in the mathematics paper. The accolade recognises the top scorers in individual subjects in the IGCSE exams, which is the equivalent of Singapore’s GCE ‘O’ Level exams.
It is the world’s most popular international educational qualification taken by students aged between 14 and 16, offered in more than 2,900 schools in 144 countries.
Darius, an Indonesian, received the award earlier this month, and has since travelled home for the holidays. He came to Singapore to study two years ago on a scholarship provided by KMP Group, one of the Salim Group of companies.
He is the first student from SJI (I) to top the global math exam. Currently in the 11th grade, he is preparing to take the International Baccalaureate exam in about two years’ time.
Commenting on his achievement, SJI (I) principal Brian Christian said Darius is an “all-rounder” who contributes to the school community both in and beyond his classroom.
“He is a natural mathematician who loves a challenge; this outstanding achievement is thoroughly deserved and is even more remarkable in the context of everything else he does here,” he said.
